Minimum and Maximum Drug Dosing Information

Quick, Simple and Safe Dosing Information

Adverse drug events (ADE's) in U.S. hospitals alone are estimated to affect about 4.3 million patients a year. Studies have shown a major cause of these events to be errors in the prescribing and dosing of drug therapy.

You can find an easy solution to this problem in First DataBank's Min/Max Dose Modules, which provide drug dosing information to professionals on the most frequently prescribed drugs. This five-module set offers an easy-to-implement resource for quick-check information on the usual range of daily doses.

Unlike First DataBank's Dosage Range Check Module, min/max dosing does not need codified patient-specific parameters to return safe dosage levels. Thus it is especially valuable in settings where adult patient-specific indication information is not typically available.

Dosing Information for Adult, Pediatric and Geriatric Patients

In all, there are five modules: three typical-dosing information modules and two range-of-dosing modules.

The three typical-dosing modules differ with respect to targeted age groups:

  • Min/Max Adult Daily Dose Module - for the average 70kg adult, aged 18-60 years of age
  • Min/Max Geriatric Daily Dose Module - for the average geriatric adult, greater than 60 years of age
  • Pediatric Dose Module - for children from 31 days to 18 years of age

The two range-of-dosing modules also differ with respect to targeted age groups:

  • Min/Max Adult Daily Range Module - for the average 70kg adult, aged 18-60 years of age
  • Min/Max Geriatric Daily Range Module - for the average geriatric adult, greater than 60 years of age

Drugs That Are Included

Drug products included in these modules are those that can be taken in measurable quantitative units, such as tablets or capsules, on a daily basis per recommended dosing guidelines. Currently, those included are the most frequently prescribed drugs that have been identified by many of our customers or end-users.

Drugs That Are Not Included

Drugs that require a patient's weight as a necessary parameter for dosing are not included in the Min/Max Adult Daily Dose Module and Min/Max Geriatric Daily Dose Module, but the Pediatric Dose Module does require it. Other types of drugs not included:

  • Most topically applied products, such as creams, lotions and ointments, because they cannot be measured quantitatively
  • Drugs such as dopamine, nitroglycerin drips, or heparin, because they require dosage adjustments or titration based on clinical effects or specialized monitoring
