Evaluations of Drug Interactions

A Comprehensive Source of Drug Interaction Information

First DataBank's Evaluations of Drug Interactions (EDI) is a comprehensive source of drug-drug interaction information—containing over 43,000 drug interactions on both prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Exclusively Endorsed by the APhA

Originally developed by the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), EDI offers you immediate access to clinically reviewed drug interaction monographs. The APhA exclusively endorses the text, and a scientific panel selected by the APhA stringently reviews each drug interaction monograph. Consulting contributors from various pharmacy practice settings ensure the appropriateness of the information presented.

Drug Interaction Monograph Content

Monographs include the following information:

  • Title - interacting drugs with generic names
  • Severity Level - four severity levels indicate potential harm to patient, frequency and predictability of the drug interaction, and degree of available documentation
  • Summary - overall effects of the drug interaction, and synopsis of the available medical literature
  • Related Drugs - evaluates agents that are pharmacologically, pharmacokinetically, or structurally related to either of the interacting drugs
  • Mechanism - description of drug interaction
  • Recommendations - suggestions for patient monitoring and management of the drug interaction
  • References - to primary medical literature; includes full titles
  • Summary Box - most of the monographs include a synopsis of the potential effects of the drug interaction, with recommendations

Timely Information

New product information and drug interactions are incorporated continually, so each EDI update provides the most timely information available. EDI is published as a two-volume loose-leaf textbook. The text is updated six times each year.

Additionally, First DataBank's Drug-Drug Interaction Module (DDIM)—a drug interaction database for integration into healthcare information systems—provides page references exclusively to EDI.
