Comprehensive Drug Side-Effects Coverage Aids in Patient Monitoring and Counseling
Creates Detailed Side Effects Lists
First DataBank's Side Effects Module addresses the problems of drug side effects and drug-induced illnesses in several ways:
- Comprehensive, detailed lists of drug side effects can be generated for use in patient monitoring and counseling
- The potential for additive drug side effects between two or more medications can be checked
- Situations can be identified in which the side effects of a given drug may complicate a patient's existing medical conditions
- Drug-induced adverse effects can be detected
- May be used in conjunction with the Indications Module to identify instances where prescribing for an iatrogenic illness might occur (when one drug is prescribed to treat the side effects of another)
The Side Effects Module can be used in prospective and retrospective environments in systems for prescribers, community or hospital pharmacies, nursing homes or long-term-care facilities, and third-party processors.
Works with the First DataBank Medical Lexicon™
The Side Effects Module uses the First DataBank Medical Lexicon (FML)—a controlled, concept-based medical vocabulary. FML uniquely represents not only indications, but also disease conditions, and health-related conditions, such as diagnoses, symptoms and side effects.
The Side Effects Module's terms or phrases can be searched or displayed using either primary professional terminology or standard medical abbreviations. For consumer applications, layman synonyms are provided. FML allows related Side Effect Module-specific concept searches and alerts.
