AHFS FRAMEWORK

Integration Platform for AHFS Drug Information
Today more than ever, healthcare professionals need convenient access to drug information from within their clinical decision-support systems. Using current callable reference software, these professionals typically have to switch applications, perform repetitive searches and master multiple software interfaces. And with printed documents, they further lose the instant access, search capabilities and convenience of having information at their fingertips. In either case, they lose valuable time when their normal workflow is interrupted.

But now First DataBank offers developers a solution to these problems: the AHFS Framework. The Framework facilitates integration of the full-text AHFS Drug Information Monographs with First DataBank's NDDF Plus knowledge base for use in pharmacy and clinical information systems. This enables pharmacists, physicians and other healthcare professionals to have seamless access to comprehensive drug information—within their usual workflow. Thus they can easily navigate from top-level drug data down to in-depth reference information, all within a single system.

Two Reliable Drug Knowledge Bases
Through a partnership with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), First DataBank has offered the American Hospital Formulary Service (AHFS) Drug Information (DI) monographs for several years. These full-text monographs, prepared under the auspices of the ASHP, have evolved over the past four decades into one of the most authoritative sources of unbiased, evaluative drug information. Written for the professional, they include over 1,100 clinical descriptions on over 50,000 drug products. These detailed monographs have become a pharmacy standard, appealing to a wide range of healthcare professionals in a variety of environments.

This monograph information can now be rapidly integrated with First DataBank's NDDF Plus knowledge base, using the AHFS Framework. NDDF Plus provides comprehensive coverage of clinical, descriptive and pricing information on medications approved by the FDA, plus data on herbals, nutraceuticals and dietary supplements. It can also be integrated with clinical decision-support modules on dosing and orders, interactions, lab conflicts, allergy alerts, disease contraindications, drug image identification and much more.

Fast System Implementation
Using the AHFS Framework, you can quickly and easily integrate this respected drug information directly into your healthcare information system. As a result, your clinician customers will no longer have to waste time switching between information sources, performing repeated searches or mastering several software interfaces. And your system will provide far more convenient access than printed references, giving your customers instant drug information--without interrupting their usual workflow.

Like First DataBank's Drug Information Framework, the AHFS Framework speeds integration by shielding your software engineers from the complexities of database access and processing. You have a choice of technologies and access layers, because the Framework adapts to most platforms, operating systems, development tools and relational databases. Application environments can include the Internet, client/server networks and standalone desktops.

Increased Customer Value
In addition to increasing the power and performance of your healthcare information system, the AHFS Framework can greatly enhance the value you offer your customers:

  • Provide instant access—from within your system—to AHFS DI monographs, along with connectivity to NDDF Plus drug data and its extensive clinical decision-support modules.
  • Offer sophisticated, detailed search capabilities throughout the AHFS DI professional monographs.
  • Retrieve and display monographs for the clinician based on powerful search categories, such as Therapeutic Class.
  • Follow automatic links between NDDF Plus data and AHFS DI monographs to "drill down" to the appropriate level of detail.
